Cleaning Your Cast Iron – Who Knew?

Quick tip for your grilling and cast iron cleaning needs! Want to know how to effectively clean that cast iron after the corn bread, or the camp fire? Simply pour a tablespoon or so of coarse salt (kosher is just fine) and let sit for a minute or so and then wipe away with a paper towel. The coarseness loosens up the crusties from your dinner and keeps it well oiled and lubed. Trust me, it is THAT EASY and will be ready for the next time you cook. STAY AWAY from soap and water and your cast iron, any size, can last a long time.

  • Mike,

If you are a reader of books by John Lescroart, you would know that one of his characters, an attorney by the name of Dismas Hardy, has a ten pound cast iron pan that he uses for all his cooking, and always cleans it afterward with some coarse salt, telling his friends he would never dare put soap and water in the pan.
