The Manhattan

The Manhattan is one of the great cocktails of all time. The story goes that it originated, in New York City back in the 1870s as part of a social event, the term “Manhattan” stuck as part location, part social status.

Traditionally made with whiskey, bourbon or rye whiskey, this great cocktail is simple to make and even for non-whiskey drinkers, can be a real treat.  When I sip on on one, I feel like I should be in a tweed jacket, a scarf, or maybe slowly puffing on a cigar…it has that kind of effect.

Making these at home are a great way to establish yourself as a “throwback” bar keep and host, not some new-fangled hipster from Vegas. These are the kind of drinks a man needs in his repertoire for sure.

The Manhattan

4 oz bourbon/rye
2 oz sweet vermouth
2 dashes Blacksmith Trading Co bitters (traditionally Agnostura)
2-4 drops maraschino liqueur
1 frozen cherry

Pour all ingredients into shaker/stirring pitcher and stir 15-30 times (with ice). Strain into your favorite martini or coupe-style glass.

Garnish with frozen cherry.
